Had an emergency haul out on a Sunday, they had me out within an hr and possibly saved my boat from sinking. Very professional staff, with different specialties, Repairs were done right and we were on our way in a short time. Rates were fair for work done, haul out was one of the least expensive, with flat rate hull cleaning we really got our $$ worth.
Highly recommend if your in the Nanaimo area. Thanks Stones!
BEWARE OF THESE MECHANICS. I took my boat in for Repairs on 6 things. Bilge pump replacement, tachometer rewire/repair (main engine), fuel sender replacement(which i provided and removed old unit), nav light replacement, kicker motor service (thermostat, water pump, impeller, water in oil and some smoke while starting), and the horn. I had pumped all fuel from the tank and it was clean, no water, and removed old fuel sender prior to dropping it off. I explained the symptoms that my kicker was showing while doing the work order. I requested that the kicker service, bilge pump and tachometer were top priority and any other work was only to be done if the important work was completed within budget. I set the price cap @$2000 and requested a call if work was to exceed this price. It says so right on my copy of the work order. The main engine was running great before i took it in. Had a phone call from a mechanic telling me the kicker’s carbs Had been rebuilt instead, and the shifter at the helm had been taken apart and rebuilt. A new one is only $300. When I tried to go over the already listed issues on the work order he was not the slightest bit interested in listening to what I had to say or doing anymore work on the kicker and told me both motors were running perfectly. When I went to pick up the boat the bill was over $2900. I had to borrow money to pick it up. When i questioned the total of the bill and the Lack of a break down of services (over 20 hours labour On the invoice with no breakdown of how long each job took) the serviceman was rude, and suggested that I got a great deal for the money spent and that I could have spent twice as much money and time and my boat would still need more work. I did not appreciate being made to feel that my boat was a piece of trash, or that they did me some huge favour by fixing it for almost $1000 over my budget. To make matters worse, they told me that when they installed the new fuel sender they had to pump a substantial amount of water out of the fuel tank (it was bone dry empty when i dropped it off and it was clear and sunny the entire week with no rain). They then added 20L fresh gas to test the motors before I picked it up. When i launched the boat, it Died within 3 mins of the launch and i needed a tow back. When i called about the problem I was told that it would need all the carbs rebuilt because it must have sucked some of the water they pumped out into the fuel lines. Once again there was no water in the fuel i pumped out, all of it was reused with no issue. In the end i had to pay another mechanic to look at it and he found that the 20L fuel that had been added was full of water!!??. Never had a water issue before, or since and i have been using this boat for 12 years. I ended up paying my new mechanic to fix this problem (all he did was emptied the tank again and drained the carbs, no rebuild necessary) and then did the necessary work i mentioned on the kicker. He was half the rate of Stones and clearly worked twice as fast as the guys at Stones. I would have given Stones a 1 star review but they did a good job on the bilge, fuel sender, nav light bulb replacement and tachometer repair so for that I gave 2 star. Because of the attitude I had to deal with, the massive overage of the bill without any consultation, and the fact my boat would not run and I needed to find another mechanic because i did not trust Stones after this, I would not recommend Stones to anybody, and will never ever spend another dime there again. My new mechanic quickly and efficiently tackled the issues Stones was reluctant to handle and had my kicker taken apart and repaired in half of a day. It was not at all running “perfectly” as stated by Stones. Now it has clean oil, no smoke, and the pump/impeller and thermostat are working perfectly. I seriously question how much work was actually done for over 20 hours labour at $120/hr. Im sure these guys are great if you have a yacht and millions of dollars but for me me being an average middle class joe it proved a very poor and costly decision.
