Freeze, or frost, plugs are small, cylindrical-shaped metal plugs that are used to fill the passages in an engine created by the sand cores from the casting process. During production, passages are created in engines that allows for the removal of casting sand. To fill these passages – and therefore protect against coolant leaks – engine makers use frost plugs.

In the past, fresh water was used to cool combustion engines. While effective at removing heat, fresh water is susceptible to freezing. When the water coolant inside an engine froze, its frost plugs would push out. Most marine diesel engines today no longer use fresh water as coolant, but use a combination of water and antifreeze. Nonetheless, you should still use caution to protect your engine’s frost plugs from failure.

In such a case, that portion of the remaining Limited Warranty may transfer to the subsequent purchaser of the product, even though somebody has used the product.
